Heinz Vinegar and a Fan
Who ever thought that such little things could bring such joy to our lives. Every time we ate at school or in a Dominican Restaurant there was always this lingering aftertaste that something wasn't quite right. After trying a recipe at home, we quickly discovered that this nastiness was the Dominican vinegar. It basically destroys anything you put it in, and it's in a lot of things here. Our friends heard about our disgust for the vinegar and graciously gave us their Heinz vinegar when they moved back home. Now, don't all send us Heinz vinegar from home. We can buy it here, we just didn't know that we needed to.
There are other simplicities here that we no longer take for granted. For instance, when it's raining, it is quite a priviledge to have running water. Our water comes directly from up the mountain. So, when it's raining in the mountains, they have to turn it off to clean the filter. The first thing we do when we get home every day is check to see if there is power and then turn on the hot water tank so that maybe one of us could have a 5 minute hot shower. Having running water and electricity is like having a hot tub and satellite dish in Canada.
We do keep a large container of water on our back balcony for flushing and doing dishes. We also have two drinking water jugs so we're usually okay if the water does go out, it's just a nuisance. As for electricity, well, let's just say that it's taken me almost 2 whole days to try and dry mangoes in my friends food dehydrator. I think it's a hopeless case.

I think Terry should be careful at waterfalls, especially lifting you. He could fall and crack open his skull again. Don't you have a picture like this already from your wedding. Yeah, yeah we know, Terry is strong, he can pick you up, have some kids and end the honeymoon already.
P.S. I am not bitter just realisitic
So were we all supposed to know that Dominican is really just a large mass of gorgeous waterfalls??? I'm jealous. I relate though, to the whole power/water luxury. Have candles lost their romantic appeal for you yet? We've had so many candlelit nights we're dreaming of dates by fluorescent lighting :). I'm so impressed that you're posting relatively regularly. You make us look bad, but we love hearing the news. love from africa...
